YouTube
During my spare time in June 2020 I took a leap into YouTube, and it was here that I began creating videos for a niche, within a niche.
I learned video editing, and before long I recognised the importance of accurate, sharp, and sensitive editing. Firstly it must engage and capture your audience, sustain their attention, then quickly establish a pace that carries their interest whilst maintaining their focus on the subject matter - seamlessly & unnoticeably - from the start to the finish of every presentation. The importance of engagement and how it helps grow my channel and community as well as being part of a wider community and contributing to it.
I recorded and added my own voiceovers for additional structure, and to further substantiate the subject-matter of each video.
There were multiple lessons and learning-curves along the way, but the one thing that surprised me the most was how utterly obsessed I would get over the Analytics. Understanding the importance of search terms fascinated me, not only on Youtube, but generally. The means by which to attract & to draw people in via various search engines and other platforms, the importance of Thumbnails, since they are key to successfully standing out within a vast ocean of information, the importance of a good click-through rate, knowing when it’s worth going back to recreate thumbnails, adjusting search terms etc.
Getting a feel for the YouTube algorithm, how it changes over time and the importance of audience retention for growth on YouTube.
